Community's assistance is needed for refugees - Pêdiviya penaberên nuh bi alîkariya civakê heye

In the last two years a number of Kurdish refugees including Yazidis have arrived in Australia from Syria and Iraq. These refugees so far have been settled in Wagga Wagga, Toowoomba, Coffs Harbour and lately some in Armidale.

Settlement Services International (SSI) is a community organisation that supports newcomers and other Australians to achieve their full potential.

We spoke to Humanitarian Settlement Program (HSP) team leader Nabaz Qadhi about the newly arriving Yazidi refugees and the services that are provided to these newcomers.

Australia's Sex Discrimination Commissioner suspects workplace sexual harassment in Australia is increasing.  

The Australian Human Rights Commission conducts regular surveys into sexual harassment and Commissioner Kate Jenkins says this year's survey results are showing an increase.

The Commission is now taking submissions for a national inquiry into the problem which will be conducted over the next 12 months.

The contribution of Indigenous women to Australia's defence services remains a little known aspect of the nation's history.

During this year's NAIDOC week they have received special acknowledgement for their service.

Their growing influence has also been celebrated.

Michael L. Chyet is a linguist of Middle Eastern languages at the Library of Congress. Formerly he was senior editor of the Kurdish Service VOA and professor the Kurdish at the University of Paris and at the Washington Kurdish Institute.

He has written a Kurdish-English dictionary. He is a skilful linguist who is fluent in several Middle Easter Languages, including Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, Turkish and at least two dialects of Kurdish, both Sorani and Kurmanji, in addition to several other European languages.

Poet Tara Ibo is from Afrin, Syria. Due to the war in Syria she fled the country in 2013 to Kurdistan Region, Iraq.

Her love of writing poetry started from a young age, her poems are all about love. After becoming a refugee she became serious about writing.

We spoke to Tara Ibo about her journey as a writer and the reason she writes in Arabic and not Kurdish.

Armidale community welcomes new refugees

In 2015 the Abbott government announced that Australia would resettle 12,000 refugees from Syria and Iraq.

Since August 2016 approximately 1160 Kurdish and Yazidi refugees (mainly Yazidis) have arrived in the country from Syria and Iraq, with the majority resettling in Toowoomba, Queensland as well as in Wagga Wagga, Coffs Harbour and more recently Armidale, New South Wales.

But new research suggests listening to the radio can boost their mood and quality of life.

The researchers are hoping their study will encourage more radio programming aimed at elderly Australians.

Musician Veli Toprak has been involved with Kurdish community and other communities since the 1980s in Sydney. He's been an active member of the community by providing his musical services in functions and other events.

We spoke to Mr Toprak about an up coming event by the name of "Sense of Harmony" which is organised to launch his new CD “Dilan” (dance).

Veli Toprak has many talents, he sings, plays many different musical instruments such as the Tenboor, jumbush and others.

We also speak about his journey in the community for the last 30 years and the differences between today's Kurdish community and back then.

The United Nations has condemned the Australian government's deportation of a Tamil asylum seeker, separating him from his wife and child.

30-year-old Thileepan Gnaneswaran was deported in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Twenty-four health advocacy groups and a state government health agency are joining forces in a bid to effectively eliminate smoking in less than a decade.

The Quit Victoria-led campaign aims to reduce the daily smoking rate to 5 per cent by 2025.

Hiwa Osman is the CEO of Mediawan.me since 2011. He leads a creative media and communications agency in Iraq and Kurdistan. He is an award-winning journalist with strong media developments and communications and PR skills.

He was the media advisor for President Jalal Talabani from 2005 to 2008.  He held a number of senior editorial and media development positions and led editorial teams to produce, newspapers, magazines, radio and TV programmes and shows.
Before and during the 2003 war in Iraq, Hiwa was a producer and reporter for the BBC.
He later helped setup the Iraq office for the International NGO, the Institute for War and Peace Reporting and served as the lead trainer and later the country director in the company.

In May 2012, the International Council for Press and Broadcasting of the Next Century Foundation announced awarded him for Outstanding Contribution to New Media in London.    

We spoke to journalist Hiwa Osman about the situation in Iraq and the latest protests against the Iraqi government.

Since its rollout in 2016, the NDIS has helped almost a hundred and fifty thousand people.

But some Australians from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds are being left behind.

World Hepatitis Day is on July 28 of every year. Its aim is to raise global awareness of hepatitis — a group of infectious diseases known as Hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E.  Nine out of ten people living with viral hepatitis are unaware of it.

We spoke Dr Sorani about hepatitis and the disease's impact on Australians. In this interview Dr Sorani explains to us the different types of hepatitis and the precautions people should take.
